German Cockroaches

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are small, flat-backed insects that are typically light brown or tan in color. German cockroaches are identifiable from other species of cockroach by the two parallel stripes in the space between their neck and abdomen. Cockroaches are known to be incredibly resistant to disease and adverse survival conditions, earning them a reputation as one of the most resilient types of insect. Their incredibly fast reproductive rate paired with their rapid movement and aversion to light make cockroaches a difficult pest to manage without proper assistance.

Warning Signs

It’s often said that if you see one cockroach, there are likely many more that you can’t see. While seeing only one or two cockroaches may seem insignificant, it is often an indication of an infestation. Given their nocturnal tendencies, seeing a cockroach in your home during the day is an especially big indicator of an infestation. Locations that contain sources of food and water, such as kitchens and bathrooms, are typically prime destinations for cockroaches.

Aside from spotting a cockroach, there are many other signs you can look out for to identify an infestation. Roaches often have an unpleasant, musty smelling odor that indicates their presence. You may also see traces of their fecal matter (pictured below) in areas where an infestation is occurring.

Damage

Cockroaches can be incredibly damaging to your property. The fecal matter left behind from an infestation is often difficult to remove as it leaves behind a dark coloration on the surfaces it touches (pictured on the left). Cockroaches also feed on organic matter, which poses a risk of damage to paper and cardboard-based materials as well as certain fabrics.

Aside from the damages associated with your property, cockroaches also pose substantial health risks if an infestation is left untreated. Cockroaches are known to spread bacteria that can lead to substantial health risks. The saliva, droppings, and shed body parts that cockroaches leave behind contain allergens that are often associated with respiratory issues such as asthma.
